Michael Malice, Mystery Speaker

It was the summer of 2018. The Mises Institute’s week-long summer program, called Mises University, was set to feature its annual mystery speaker.

It was Michael Malice, whom you surely know from the Tom Woods Show.

Michael had missed his flight, so in order for him to arrive at the Institute even close to on time, he wouldn’t be able to wait for the shuttle. I’d have to drive from Auburn to Atlanta to pick him up and race him back.

Laws were broken, my friends. I’ll just say that.

Anyway, Michael had had two requirements:

(1) Jeff Deist, president of the Mises Institute, had to read a letter written by Michael to the assembled audience. The letter would be in a sealed envelope, and Jeff would not have been able to read it in advance.

(2) A video Michael supplied had to be played before he emerged.

By Michael’s request, no video of the event is available.

If you’re curious, you can watch the video that was played to the audience before Michael’s entrance. It’s bizarre, yet you can’t look away:

What I can tell you is:

The letter was hysterical, and Michael’s entrance was triumphant.

He proceeded to hold the audience spellbound for 45 minutes. I had never seen anything like it.

Now when people have Michael on their shows, they ask him about North Korea, or the right wing, or other things he’s known to specialize in. Nobody ever asks him the meta questions, like how he pulls off something like that.

He’s a master troll, too, but he’s rarely asked about that, either.

Yet these are the details that make people truly memorable, not to mention effective. And they’re the kinds of things that Brett Veinotte of the School Sucks Podcast teased out of a bunch of us, Michael included, in his Ideas into Action Summit.

This is the stuff that can make YOU stand out from the crowd.
