‘An Orwellian Nightmare’: Young Congressional Candidate Madison Cawthorn Warns Of Anarchy Without Police, The Danger Of ‘Mob Mentality’

Madison Cawthorn, the 24-year-old recent Republican nominee for Congress, cautioned defunding the police and “mob mentality” will create dangerous anarchy.

Cawthorn described the “far-left liberals’” efforts to defund the police as “laughable” and its intended anarchy “reeks of an Orwellian nightmare,” during a phone interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation. The 24-year-old also noted 99% of policemen and women hold themselves to “an extremely high standard” and he’s “firmly against defunding the police.”

“They want to defund the police department so there’s no law and order so that anarchy becomes bound, which is obviously not anyone’s end goal because they can’t have any power then. So what would happen is all of the American people would be crying out saying, ‘please protect us,’ ‘I don’t feel safe in my home,’ ‘I don’t want to kill my fellow American,’ you know ‘please come in and save us’. And so, what I believe is going to happen is its going to create a nationalized police force is going to come in. And you know what, I believe that this is going to push us more towards a centralization of power. And that is a really scary world to me. I mean, it just reeks of an Orwellian nightmare,” Cawthorn told the DCNF.

“At the end of the day we cannot demonize the police, they are ones who keep us safe in society,” he added.

The 24-year-old won the Republican primary runoff in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District on Tuesday. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows previously held the House seat before retiring from Congress. Cawthorn claimed more than 65% of the vote against Lynda Bennett when poll watchers called the race. President Donald Trump called the young nominee to congratulate him from Air-Force One.

On other issues discussed, particularly statue removal, Cawthorn emphasized how “mob mentality has no intelligence,” and advocated for “sober-minded, candid conversations.”

“I’m not against pulling down our statues of confederate generals and confederate leaders. I do not believe it should be done by a mob. I don’t think we should go out in the night masked, put a truck around it and pull it down. What I do believe is it’s going to require some sober-minded and some very candid conversations and a debate where its going to be voted upon and we make a decision. I don’t believe in erasing history, but I don’t think we should romanticize what these confederate generals did,” he told the DCNF.

Cawthorn is favored to win the November general election against Democrat Moe Davis, a retired Air Force Colonel, the Hill reported. If he succeeds, Cawthorn will be one of the youngest to take a congressional seat at the House of Representatives.
