Who Will Be Your Wally Pipp?

There are people around you who want you to believe it is not time to step up.

They want you to live your life as if you are sitting on the bench.

They want you to be an onlooker and not an actor.

They want, with all their might, to convince you how futile it is to be anything else.

They want you to believe how powerful your enemy is, how much you have to fear, and how incredibly weak you are.

There are people in your life who need you to have this perspective about yourself, because if you take on a different perspective, suddenly life becomes so much more difficult for them.

There was a man named Lou Gehrig. Lou Gehrig held the record for decades for the most consecutive games in baseball every played. Lou Gehrig was a work horse. Lou Gehrig showed up and worked hard. Lou Gehrig would have kept working hard except he got sick and gave a speech in which he referred to himself as “the luckiest man on the face of this earth.” (https://www.si.com/mlb/2009/07/05/gehrig-text).

Legend has it that Lou Gehrig’s big break came after a man named Wally Pipp didn’t show up ready for work. Lou Gehrig got off the bench, and Lou Gehrig never went back on the bench once he got a taste of what it meant to stop sitting the bench, once he got a taste of the opportunity, once he got a taste for what greatness could look like.

And Lou Gehrig became a great, one of the all-time greats.

In your life, a question then emerges: who will be your Wally Pipp?

Who is your Wally Pipp?

Who’s that one sitting there hoping you don’t recognize your own greatness?

Who’s the one sitting there hoping that you like sitting on the bench, and you consider it your place, and you think yourself inferior to them?

Who’s that one sitting there hoping you don’t recognize what a moment you have at your disposal?

Who’s that one hoping that you don’t rise up?

Who’s that one who will be your Wally Pipp?

I see them all around me, and they mean so little to me, other than perhaps a little bit of encouragement to see how magnificent they understand the potential of my life to be — sometimes, perhaps even more magnificent than I recognize the potential of my life to be.

I turn on the television and listen to the news and, I see how much effort is put in to convincing me how weak I am. I see how much effort is put in to convincing me how wrong I am. I see how much effort is put into convincing me how I’ve already lost. I see how much effort is put in to convincing me resistance is futile. It’s not worth it to fight. That’s what so much money, time, and effort is spent on convincing me of — things like this.

Me!

Why me?!

Who cares about me?!

You. You too. Convincing you. Who cares about you?

A trillion dollar media machine cares about you. A trillion dollar media machine exists to get in your head. A trillion dollar media machine exists to convince you how little you matter. A trillion dollar media machine exists to convince you how little your actions mean. And that doesn’t even touch the tip of the iceberg of the academia machine that convinces you of the same, through all kinds of schools of thought.

Whether it be called post-modernism or be called nihilism. Whether it would be called Marxist thought or critical theory. There are a whole host of schools of thought that share something in common. It’s the idea that your actions do not matter. That your actions do not matter to you and do not matter to anyone else, so what’s the point of acting. Why not remain apathetic. Why not remain discouraged. Why not just seek out enjoyment in life, because if there is nothing else worth living for than enjoyment, at least make it an enjoyable life.

The epicureanism. The hedonism. The living of life for pleasure and feeling, as opposed to living a life of purpose and value. The entire range of it, the entire gamut of it — that seeks to exist to sabotage you.

So much effort goes into convincing you to sit on the bench, to not act in your own life. You can even look at the church and see the exact same effort playing out, as politics and those same academic theories are spoken from the pulpit more than you hear the name Jesus.

It can be no surprise that politicians seek to have you unwilling to act, even in your own life. They need a docile population to simplify their own lives.

But why would so much media effort be put into doing so?

Why would so much effort in academia be put into doing so?

Why would so much effort in the church be put into doing so?

Why would so much effort, everywhere you look, be put into convincing you to ride the bench?

Why would so much effort be put into convincing you not to rise up, not to stand up, not to get out there and play, not to get out in your life and act?

Why would so much effort be put into convincing you to be anything but the Lou Gehrig that you were born to be?

Who are these Wally Pipps? What is their agenda? Does a single word out of their mouths offer you anything edifying?

They may call themselves friend to you. They may call themselves ally to you. They may call themselves neighbor, church member, loved one, family member, parent, child, brother, sister. Whatever the Wally Pipps call themselves, if they’re not telling a story of how much potential you have to change everything around you, then they’re telling the wrong story.

Then no matter what they call themselves, they ain’t nothing but a Wally Pipp.

Stand up. Say “No more!” Play like this is the last game you’ll ever play and like your life is on the line. Because it is. “Face Masks in One Lesson, these LewRockwell.com writings, and the email newsletter at RealStevo.com are tools crafted to do exactly that.
