‘Painful And Racist History’: NYC Health Czar Demands That WHO Rename Monkeypox

New York City’s top public health official told the World Health Organization (WHO) to rename monkeypox in a Wednesday letter.

“NYC joins many public health experts and community leaders who have expressed their serious concern about continuing to exclusively use the term ‘monkeypox’ given the stigma it may engender, and the painful and racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color,” Dr. Ashwin Vasan, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, wrote to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO.
