Federal prosecutors have charged Fall River, Mass., Mayor Jasiel Correia with extortion conspiracy and aiding and abetting extortion for shaking down marijuana vendors for money in exchange for non-opposition letters that would allow them to operate in the city. Correia was already facing charges of wire fraud and filing false tax returns for allegedly defrauding investors in a business he founded.
