This April 16 marks the 500th anniversary of the revolt of the Comuneros, who rose up against Charles I, the first King of Spain in what was the first modern liberal (in the classical sense) revolution. The Comuneros may have lost, but they inspired revolts against tyranny over the next three centuries.
