A French court on the island of Reunion, located in the Indian Ocean, has fined actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot 20,000 euros ($23,000 U.S.) for describing some residents of the island as “degenerate savages.” Bardot singled out the island’s Hindu Tamil residents for sacrificing goats in religious ceremonies, calling them “a degenerate population still soaked in barbarous ancestral traditions.”
