On Friday, New York’s Mayor Eric Adams asked social media companies to censor some types of rap videos that he says glorify violence.
The mayor said that he was not familiar with drill rapping. He learned more about it from his son.
“I had no idea what drill rapping was. My son sent me videos. It was alarming,” he said.
Adams said he plans on meeting with social media companies to tell them to ban drill rap videos.
“You have a civic and corporate responsibility,” he alleged, referring to social media platforms.
The NYC mayor further explained that it was not responsible on the part of social media companies to allow drill rap videos yet they removed President Trump.
“We pulled Trump off Twitter because of what he was spewing. Yet we are allowing music [with] displaying of guns, violence. We allow this to stay on the sites,” he said.
“We are alarmed by the use of social media to really over-proliferate this violence in our communities. This is contributing to the violence that we are seeing all over the country. It is one of the rivers we have to dam.”
Adams said that he would also meet with the top hip hop artists to discuss the violence encouraged in drill rapping, because it is “causing the loss of lives of young people like them.”
