Music sharing and streaming website SoundCloud was blocked in Russia on October 1 by the media regulator Roskomnadzor at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Roskomnadzor said that the platform violated the “Information protection law,” which bans “calls for massive civil unrest, extremist activities,” and spreading “false information of public importance,” which might endanger public peace. However, the specific reason the platform was banned was not made clear.

SoundCloud has yet to comment on the ban. The order appears to have only affected the SoundCloud website and the mobile version of the app is still at least downloadable in Russia.

In March, Russia banned Instagram and Facebook after it designated tech giant Meta an extremist organization for refusing to censor content related to the invasion of Ukraine that Moscow deemed false.
