Starting in January 2023, the Moscow Metro in will expand its biometric payment service to 330 more turnstiles through the Face Pay system, making journeys more “convenient” for passengers but also more privacy-invasive.

According to Moscow Deputy Mayor for Transport Maksim Liksutov, the system is already being used by over 220 thousand users.

The metro’s new technology means that passengers can pay for their tickets using their face, meaning they no longer need to carry coins or cards with them.

The Moscow Metro’s move towards biometric payments is another example of how networks are embracing modern surveillance-connected technology.
