Top Republican and Democratic leaders of the United States Congress just can’t get enough of demonstrating their over the top support for the government of Israel. One of the latest efforts to demonstrate this extreme devotion is the announcement by US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) of the appointment of 12 Republican and Democratic House members to the new House-Knesset Parliamentary Friendship Group.
McCarthy had committed in writing, along with the Knesset speaker, to the creation of the binational group of legislators while in Israel earlier this year. The Knesset is the parliament of the Israel government.
In the July 28 press release announcing the appointment of House members to the House-Knesset Parliamentary Friendship Group, McCarthy is quoted as gushing that “Today, the growing partnership and enduring friendship between Israel and America enters an exciting new chapter.” Joining the top Republican in trumpeting devotion to the Middle East country’s government, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is quoted as declaring that “The commitment of the United States Congress to a safe and secure Israel is bipartisan and ironclad.”
What will this new House-Knesset Parliamentary Friendship Group do? McCarthy describes its function as follows:
For the first time in history, the 435 members of the House and the 120 members of the Knesset have a forum to engage directly with one another, seek solutions that benefit our nations, and faithfully represent our peoples’ hopes and dreams together. I look forward to working closely with Speaker Ohana in this effort, which I believe will further foster and strengthen the special relationship between Israel and America.
Yes, the special relationship seems to be becoming even more special.
There is not much word yet on the particulars of what the twelve Republican and Democratic House members will be up to with their Israel government counterparts in the new group. We can be pretty sure, though, that advancing a noninterventionist US foreign policy will not be on the agenda.
