Well, it’s “people who say they like Mises are actually misrepresenting him” season again, and opponents of the Libertarian Party’s Mises Caucus (referred to by Ron Paul as “the libertarian wing of the Libertarian Party”) are hurling this one around. Why, don’t we know Mises was just like them, and not at all like us non-respectables?
I always wonder, when people level this charge, whether we’re speaking about the Ludwig von Mises who served on the editorial advisory board of the magazine of the John Birch Society. This is the Mises who was so much more respectable? Mmkay.
As the author of the foreword to Mises’ book Liberalism, I actually know a bit about what the man thought.
For Mises’ real views, I recommend:
“The Cultural Thought of Ludwig von Mises” (Journal of Libertarian Studies, PDF)
“Mises on Nationalism, the Right of Self-Determination, and the Problem of Immigration“
