Comedian Andrew Schulz will self-release his upcoming special “Infamous” after refusing the demands of an unnamed streamer to remove or edit entire jokes that the platform deemed too “wild” and could result in backlash from executives.
Schulz uses has his shows stream on Netflix.
In a video posted on Twitter and Instagram, Schulz said that the streaming platform “freaked out” after receiving the final cut of the comedy special.
“Some of you probably know this about me, I’m a very stubborn guy, so long story short, I took my f—ing life savings and I bought my special back,” he told followers.
He encouraged his followers to “spread the word,” adding that his gamble paying off was up to them.
“Pre-Order now and spread the word so my wife doesn’t divorce me,” he joked in another tweet.
“I think people like real authentic comedy, and I think that they would prefer that than some watered down corporate boardroom bullshit,” Schulz said, adding that those who attend his shows “seem to really enjoy these jokes that are ‘too offensive’ or could cause too much backlash.”
He has since released two teasers from the comedy special. In one of the clips, he makes a joke about the sex life of a couple in the audience. The second clip, where he jokes that an abortion clinic is a “fucking carnival,” is more controversial. The clip starts with him saying, “This is one of the lines they were worried about for the special.”
The comedy special will be available on his website from July 17.
Schulz has previously faced backlash over his 2020 Netflix special. He was accused of racism and xenophobia for jokes targeting China and Chinese-Americans in relation to COVID-19.
