The amount of land owned by the largest private landowners has increased dramatically in the past 15 years as the wealthy accumulate vast estates in the nation’s West, The Washington Post reported Aug. 16.
In 2007, the top 100 private landowners possessed approximately 27 million acres of property, but in 2021, they controlled about 42.2 million acres, a 56% increase, according to the Post. The combined area of all land owned by the top 100 owners is approximately the size of Washington state, according to data from the Internet Public Library.
