On today’s episode of Felony Friday Tony Williams joins John to discuss the #abolishthepolice movement that started in Minneapolis. Tony is a contributor to MPD150. MPD150 is an effort by local organizers, researchers, artists and activists, in which they’ve published an investigation into the conduct of the Minneapolis Police Department throughout its 150-year history and call for abolishing the Minneapolis police.
MPD150’s goal is to shift the discussion of police violence in Minneapolis from one of procedural reforms to one of meaningful structural change. They want to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and transfer the social service functions to community-based agencies and organizations. They want to replace emergency intervention functions with models not based on military methods and to redirect resources to support community resilience and people-directed development.
