With Democrats in control of Congress and the White House, advocates for D.C. statehood have renewed calls to make the nation’s capital the 51st state. The proposal faces considerable opposition from Republicans and questions about whether it could be done through legislation alone, or requires a constitutional amendment.

Advocates argue that statehood can be achieved without violating either the Federal Enclave Clause in Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 of the Constitution, or the 23rd Amendment.
