The Virginia Hospital Center Health System, in the Washington DC area, will start using facial recognition.

VHC Health said it will use tech from a company called Certify, which develops patient identification technology, allegedly to reduce fraud and patient misidentification.

VHC Health will test the technology in its cardiology and radiology departments starting this month, a press release states. A full rollout is expected by the end of the year.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for us to have a strategic partner who is committed to innovation around the patient experience the way VHC is and so willing to adopt some of the most cutting-edge technology in healthcare right now,” said Certify’s CEO Marc Potash.

He added that the technology secures patients’ data and makes check-ins faster.

“This is one of several recent investments that VHC has made in innovative technologies as we strive to provide the safest, most secure options for our patients and community,” said VHC Health’s chief information officer Michael Mistretta.

A hospital in Pennsylvania is also already using Certify’s technology.
